Jenny and Parker discussing privicing during the first Wayfinging last week

Good news from the animal world! Wiarton Willie, along with most of his Canadian counterparts, has predicted an early spring after he did not see his shadow on Monday morning on Groundhog Day (source).

While we wait for the snow to melt, we'll be busy with sessions #2 and #3 of Wayfinding - plus the usual 1RG lineup.

🕵️‍♀️ Wayfinding: Civics

with Bianca Wylie and Hillary Hartley

Wayfinding is a series of conversations about navigating the tensions of tech in modern life.

The internet promised democratization, but it feels more and more like our attempts at civic engagement are little more than shouting into the void. Our digital tools are incredibly powerful—advocates can mobilize tens of thousands of emails to elected representatives in a weekend, educate millions overnight on social media—so why are we less engaged in our institutions and political processes than ever?

How do we build tools that are designed for action, and not emotion?

How can we re-engage with our civic institutions from a place of genuine curiosity?

How do we build democratic accountability at a human scale?

🕵️‍♀️ Wayfinding: Teenhood

a panel of teenagers moderated by 1RG Incubator graduate Rachel Long

Our culture is abound with conversations about how technology is affecting kids. We can hear read books and listen to podcasts about how social media impacts their self image or how is screen time is shaping attention spans or how to best use or ban AI in the classroom.

One notable absence from many of these conversations is the voice of the kids themselves. Adults forget that kids are not merely subjects to be protected, but autonomous actors with their own agency and a long tradition of subverting and hacking the technologies adults make for them. We do kids a disservice when we don't listen to them about their own experiences.

For Wayfinding: Teenhood, Rachel Long will be talking with a panel of teenagers from about their relationship with technology and how they see things play out among their peers. What are they afraid of? What are they excited about? How would they do things differently, if they could control the technologies available to them? And what do they wish technologists knew about their experience?
